Building the Bridge: Chum Kiu Workshop at KEI Kung Fu with Sifu Göksel

A Powerful Weekend of Wing Chun with Sifu Göksel at KEI Kung Fu

This past weekend at KEI Kung Fu we had the honor of welcoming Sifu Göksel for a 2-day Wing Chun workshop that left a strong impression on everyone who attended the event. From the very beginning there was a clear sense of focus in the room, with people who were fully present, ready to train, learn, and refine their understanding of the Wing Chun art.

The Main Theme of The Seminar: Chum Kiu

The central theme of the weekend was Chum Kiu often translated as “seeking the bridge” or “building the bridge.” However what we explored went far beyond the name. Chum Kiu is where the system starts to come alive. It takes the structure developed in the first form (Siu Nim Tao) and puts it into motion. Sifu Göksel guided our students through the first section in detail, breaking down not just what to do, but how and why. The focus wasn’t on memorizing movements, but on understanding the mechanics and feeling behind them.

As the training progressed it became clear that Chum Kiu is about integrating the whole body into every action. We worked on:

  • Staying rooted while moving
  • Using hip rotation to generate power
  • Aligning the body to deliver force efficiently
  • Maintaining structure under pressure

The rotation of the hips plays a crucial role. It acts as the engine of the movement, allowing power to be generated without sacrificing balance or control. Instead of relying on isolated strength everything becomes connected. This is where the art starts to feel more fluid and alive.

Footwork and Controlling Space

Another important aspect we explored was footwork and understanding positioning. Chum Kiu teaches you how to move with your opponent in order to mirror their movement, cut off their path, and place yourself in a position of advantage. You learn how to manage distance and control space in a way that puts you one step ahead.

More Than Techniques

What made this workshop stand out wasn’t just the techniques but the principles behind them. These are lessons that go beyond a single seminar and that form the foundation for everything that follows. You start to learn that progress doesn’t come from doing more but from understanding deeper. Workshops like this are a reminder that Wing Chun isn’t about collecting techniques. It’s about refining awareness, Improving structure and developing a body that can adapt under pressure. Chum Kiu acts as the bridge between the static foundation of the first form and the dynamic reality of application. Simple movements done with precision and intent become powerful.
