The Internal Power of Wing Chun
Wing Chun is a conceptual art form, based on the principle that by using the right posture and techniques (instead of brute muscle power) you achieve the greatest result. Students quickly learn that you do not need physical strength for this martial art. On the contrary, you learn to rely on a relaxed body when facing a physically stronger opponent. The goal is to remain calm and focused and intuitively feel when and how to act. This way you conserve your energy effectively.
An Internal Motor Gives You More Power
When Wing Chun is practiced in the “internal” way, it is an extraordinarily powerful martial art. When you start Wing Chun lessons, you usually learn which technique to use in which situation. You receive a list of techniques that you must keep practicing. We call this the “external” way. When you start practicing Wing Chun in the “internal” way, you must study the forms thoroughly, you need to be able to feel every part of your body. You learn to relax so much that you feel how your joints move. With the “internal” way, you get to know your body well, how it moves and how you can generate great power. You must first be able to feel your body well before you can use it as a destructive force on others.
We believe that practicing Wing Chun without first developing an “internal motor” limits your possibilities. When you study your body “internally,” you learn how to relax and use your body parts. This can make the difference between a strong person with huge muscles or a less strong person who has learned that with relaxation they can use their entire body weight in a strike.

In an “external” style of martial art, you have to do strength exercises to become strong and fit. But with “internal” Wing Chun, this is not necessary. We believe it is good and healthy to be fit, but it is not a requirement for Wing Chun. You must learn to relax, to release tension in your body. Too much tension isolates parts of your muscles, while you need to feel your body as one whole.
Once you have internal control over your body and mentally focus your power with your mind, you can achieve an incredible amount.
Why Practice Wing Chun?
People train at our academy for many reasons, but mainly to learn self-defense techniques, to become healthier and fitter, and because it is so much fun to do. The teachers at KEI Kung Fu have developed a curriculum where students not only get a fantastic training and workout, but also learn how to improve their mental and physical body-mind connection, health, and self-defense skills.
