The first kung fu belt ceremony of your child

The first kung fu belt ceremony of your child

Preparation for Belt Ceremony

When we want to be good at something, we have to put in effort. For this reason, it is soimportant to earn a new belt (color) in martial arts. This event is accompanied by a ceremony where friends and family are invited to watch. The higher the belt, the more family children often bring, because everyone knows it took a lot of effort and dedication to achieve this. There are therefore various things we do when our children (and adults) prepare for a belt ceremony.

Meaning and Value of the Belts

When someone talks about their belt, you probably know what they mean. A belt in almost every martial art is an indication and symbol of how dedicated someone is. A white belt symbolizes that someone is new, a yellow belt that someone has mastered the basic skills and is no longer completely new. As your child grows and is able to learn and apply various self-defense techniques, they earn a red belt. Green and blue belts are for children who continue to expand and refine their skills at increasingly higher levels. A purple belt signifies a transition to a higher level with more advanced movements. A brown belt is an important milestone: the belt preceding the coveted black belt. A child with a black belt understands the physical and mental lessons of their chosen skill. They are skilled enough to defend themselves, regardless of the situation they may face. If a child is dedicated and attends class two to three times a week, they can usually earn a black belt in about five years. However, it may take less time if the child is extremely diligent or longer if the child struggles with many challenges.

Preparing for the Belt Ceremony

At a belt ceremony, your child will need to prove that he/she can handle the responsibility of their new skills. In some cases, this may mean that your child breaks a (plastic) board or performs another task to show they are ready. Your child does this in the presence of instructors and other attendees. When the child earns a belt, everyone waits until all other children have earned theirs as a sign of respect. Family members can then watch how their children, after all their hard work, receive their reward during the ceremony.

Proof of Skill and Spirit

Whether you are a white belt or a black belt, it is both important. A white belt who just starts, shows that he/she wants more and has the mindset to commit to this challenge. A black belt has proven that he/she is dedicated to the art of martial arts, their body, and their mind. In all cases, you should be proud of yourself and be willing to respect your knowledge and skills.
