The Physical and Mental Benefits of Wing Chun Kung Fu
Wing Chun is a conceptual art form, based on the principle that by using the right posture and techniques (instead of brute muscle power) you achieve the greatest result. Students quickly learn that you don’t need physical strength for this martial art. On the contrary, you learn to rely on a relaxed body when facing a physically stronger opponent. The goal is to remain calm and focused and intuitively feel when and how to act. This way, you conserve your energy effectively.
Adults and Wing Chun Kung Fu: the benefits are worth it.
A common question among adults inquiring about classes at the Academy is: “Am I too old to start training Wing Chun kung fu?” The answer is clear: you are NEVER too old to try something new. In case you need more convincing, in this article we discuss some of the excellent benefits of Wing Chun training for adults. For the purpose of this article, we will split the benefits into ‘physical’ health and ‘mental’ health. Our experience is that it is the mental health benefits of Wing Chun that keep our adult students committed to their training, but first, let’s look at the physical health benefits.
Wing Chun Kung Fu: the physical benefits
In our classes, regardless of age group, we sweat, learn something new, and have fun. Especially for adults, the first point is the most important. Generally, the physical health benefits that come from Wing Chun kung fu training are not very different from the benefits of a regular exercise routine.
- Improved fitness
- Improved flexibility
- Weight loss (if that is the goal)
- Stronger immune system
- Better sleep
All of these things can be demonstrably achieved through a regular training regime. However, in our opinion, Wing Chun kung fu has more to offer.
- Full body workout: Wing Chun kung fu requires coordinated use of both large and small muscle groups. The result is that Wing Chun kung fu training means students burn a lot of calories on every side.
- Improved reflexes and coordination: specific training of reaction time, sparring, etc. helps students develop faster reflexes and the “full-body” cooperation needed to perform certain techniques helps students develop better coordination.
- Stress relief: sometimes nothing relieves stress like hitting something! Wing Chun kung fu training gives students the unique opportunity to physically reduce stress in this way. In adult classes at our kung fu school, there is always an opportunity for students to take out stress on our gloves.
Wing Chun Kung Fu: the mental benefits
If these physical health benefits are not enough reason to try Wing Chun kung fu, let’s take a look at some of the mental health benefits of training! Again, any regular exercise has some mental health benefits, such as:
- Improved mood
- Better self-confidence and more self-respect
- Improved self-image
These are all great benefits, but what else does Wing Chun kung fu specifically bring into your life?
- Goal setting: the process of setting and achieving goals is key to a healthy self-image and satisfaction. The satisfaction that comes from achieving goals is a big part of what keeps our adult students engaged and committed to training. We also find that once our students get used to setting goals in class, these valuable skills transfer to other aspects of life, such as career and family life.
- Morals and values: Wing Chun kung fu training is NOT just about physical training. We train various life skills (such as respect, determination, honesty, etc.) that also develop character. At any age, it is necessary to be reminded of the skills that make us good people. If we can feel confident and spend time with others who share the same values and character, this is a powerful tool for our well-being.
- Improved confidence: Wing Chun kung fu training gives a student a special kind of confidence. We don’t just train effective self-defense techniques, we train a mentality that doesn’t give up, that understands our inherent strength, and is comfortable and confident in our abilities, both during training and in life. This is the power of training, it not only changes your body, it changes your mind.
Remember, you are NEVER too old to try something new. The best thing you can do for your mental health is to keep challenging yourself to learn and improve your skills. We invite you to come try a few classes at the KEI Kung Fu Academy and see for yourself all the benefits that Wing Chun kung fu training has to offer!
